Natural Gas
Natural gas, a fossil fuel mainly composed of methane, is considered a cleaner-burning energy source compared to coal and oil. It has become a popular choice for electricity generation and home heating.
Extracted via drilling, natural gas is often found alongside oil. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is sometimes used to access difficult-to-reach deposits in shale formations.
Natural gas is burned in power plants to produce electricity or used directly in heating and industrial processes. Its high efficiency and relatively low emissions make it widely used.
Although cleaner than coal and oil, burning natural gas still emits carbon dioxide. Methane leaks during extraction and transport also pose climate risks, as methane is a potent greenhouse gas.
Natural gas may play a transitional role as countries move toward renewable energy. Innovations like biogas and hydrogen blending aim to make it a cleaner option for the future.
